Detian Waterfall
德天瀑布
A broad cross-border waterfall on the Guichun river between China and Vietnam
Detian Waterfall is a wide, multi-tiered waterfall on the Guichun river in Daxin county, south-western Guangxi, where the river forms the border between China and Vietnam. With Ban Gioc on the Vietnamese side it makes up the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, spilling over travertine steps between karst peaks.

Overview
The Guichun river (归春河, Guīchūn Hé) rises in Guangxi, loops into Vietnam and returns, and at Detian it drops over a series of limestone and travertine ledges into a broad pool. The Chinese side of the falls is called Detian; the adjoining section on the Vietnamese side, Ban Gioc (Bản Giốc). Together they form a single curtain of water more than a hundred metres wide, set among the tower karst and rice fields of the border country.
The falls are a meeting point of two countries as much as a natural sight. A boundary marker from the late Qing period stands near the top of the falls, and in 2023 China and Vietnam opened a cross-border tourism cooperation area that lets visitors walk a short circuit into the neighbouring country's side under managed arrangements.
How the landscape formed
The river flows over limestone of the south China karst. Where it steepens, calcium carbonate precipitates as the water churns and loses carbon dioxide, building travertine terraces and lips that shape the falls into multiple tiers. Mosses and plants growing in the spray are coated with lime and add to the deposits. Around the falls rise fengcong karst peaks, and the valley floor is farmed in paddies watered by the river.
Highlights
Main falls
德天瀑布
The three-tiered curtain on the Chinese side, at its most powerful in the summer rainy season.
Ban Gioc Waterfall
板约瀑布
The Vietnamese section of the same falls, seen across the river from the Chinese bank.
Boundary marker
界碑
A stone boundary marker of the late Qing period above the falls, recording the Sino-French demarcation of the border.
Guichun River
归春河
The border river below the falls, where bamboo rafts approach the spray.
Culture and legend
The border country around Detian is home mainly to the Zhuang, China's largest minority, whose villages, stilted and brick houses, and rice terraces line the valley. Across the river live the Tày and Nùng of Vietnam, closely related in language and customs. The frontier was delimited between Qing China and French Indochina in the 1880s and 1890s, and a China–Vietnam land border treaty signed in 1999 settled the line again.
Zhuang people
壮族
The Tai-speaking people of Guangxi, the majority in the villages around the falls.
Mingshi pastoral landscape
明仕田园
A valley of karst peaks, river and rice fields nearby, often compared with the Li River landscape.
Tongling Grand Canyon
通灵大峡谷
A deep karst gorge with a waterfall and cave, also in the Chongzuo border region.
History
1880s–1890s
Border demarcation
Qing China and France delimit the frontier with French Indochina, placing boundary markers along the Guichun river.
1999
China–Vietnam land border treaty
The two countries agree the land border, followed by demarcation completed in 2008.
2023
Cross-border tourism cooperation area opens
China and Vietnam jointly open the Detian–Ban Gioc area for managed visits across the border at the falls.
Through the seasons
Spring
Water begins to rise, and the rice fields are planted; mild and often misty.
Summer
Peak flow in the rainy season, when the falls are widest and loudest but the water is brown with sediment.
Autumn
The best season for many visitors: good flow with clearer water, and golden rice harvest in the valley around September and October.
Winter
Low water shrinks the falls into separate strands, though the travertine tiers are more visible.
Routes and ways in
Viewpoints and riverside path
Paths lead from the park entrance to viewpoints above and beside the falls and down to the river.
Bamboo raft to the falls
Rafts cross the pool towards the foot of the falls, keeping to the Chinese side of the border river.
Cross-border cooperation area
A short managed circuit that includes the Vietnamese side; entry requires the formalities set by both countries.
Practical notes
- The river is an international border: do not cross it except through the official cooperation area, and follow signs and the instructions of border staff.
- The spray zone is wet and slippery; waterproof shoes help.
- Detian lies in Daxin county, Chongzuo; it is usually reached by road from Nanning or Chongzuo, and is often combined with Mingshi and Tongling Canyon.
