Shijiazhuang

石家庄 (Shíjiāzhuāng)

Railway city at the foot of the Taihang, with Zhengding and the Zhaozhou Bridge nearby

Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei, a city that grew from a village at a railway junction in the early twentieth century and became the provincial seat in 1968. Its own history is short, but its jurisdiction includes the old prefectural town of Zhengding, the sixth-century Zhaozhou Bridge and Xibaipo, the last rural headquarters of the Communist leadership before 1949.

Overview

Until the early twentieth century Shijiazhuang was a village of a few hundred people on the plain east of the Taihang. The Beijing–Hankou railway, opened in 1905, and the Zhengtai railway to Taiyuan, which branched off here from 1907, turned it into a junction where goods were transferred between the two lines, and a town grew around the station. It became the capital of Hebei in 1968.

Today it is a large city of the North China Plain, known for its pharmaceutical industry, textiles and logistics. Most visitors come for what lies around it: the temples of Zhengding just north of the centre, the Zhaozhou Bridge to the south-east, the provincial museum's Han-dynasty jade suits, and the Taihang valleys to the west.

History

The area around Shijiazhuang was the heartland of the small Warring States kingdom of Zhongshan, whose royal tombs lie in Pingshan county. For most of imperial history the regional centre was Zhengding (Changshan, Zhending), a walled prefectural city on the Hutuo River. Shijiazhuang itself developed only with the railways. In November 1947 it was the first large city taken by the Communist forces in north China, and in 1948 the Party leadership established its headquarters at Xibaipo in the hills to the west. After 1949 the city was built up as an industrial centre, with the North China Pharmaceutical factory producing penicillin from the 1950s.

Culture

As a young industrial city, Shijiazhuang has little of the old urban culture of Beijing or Baoding, and its identity is bound up with the railways, factories and the many migrants from rural Hebei who built it. Its older culture belongs to Zhengding, a Buddhist centre since the Northern dynasties and the home of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism, founded by Linji Yixuan at the Linji Temple there in the ninth century.
