What was the Wenzhou model?

The name given in the 1980s to Wenzhou's path of development through household workshops, private firms and specialised markets rather than state or collective enterprises. It became a reference point in China's debates about private business.

Why is the Wenzhou dialect hard to understand?

It is a Southern Wu variety that developed in isolation behind the mountains of southern Zhejiang and preserves old sounds and vocabulary. Even speakers of other Wu dialects find it difficult.

Wenzhou is a prefecture-level city on the coast of southern Zhejiang at the mouth of the Ou River. Isolated by mountains for most of its history, it developed a distinctive dialect and a strong commercial culture; in the 1980s its family businesses and markets made the “Wenzhou model” a byword for private enterprise, and Wenzhou emigrants form one of the largest Chinese communities in Europe. It is also the birthplace of Southern drama and the gateway to the Yandang Mountains.

Overview

Wenzhou faces the East China Sea behind a barrier of mountains that cut it off from the rest of the province until railways and motorways arrived in the late twentieth century. That isolation preserved the Wenzhou dialect, one of the most divergent forms of Chinese, and encouraged a culture of trade by sea and of emigration.

After 1978 Wenzhou's households set up workshops making shoes, buttons, lighters, eyeglasses and low-voltage electrical goods, sold through a nationwide network of Wenzhou traders. Communities from Wenzhou and nearby Qingtian are prominent in Italy, France and Spain.

History

The Han-era kingdom of Dong'ou ruled the Ou valley. The city was walled in 323 on a plan attributed to the geomancer Guo Pu. In the Southern Song, Wenzhou was home to the Yongjia school of practical statecraft and to the first mature Chinese drama, nanxi. It opened as a treaty port in 1877. In the reform era it became famous for private enterprise.

Culture

Wenzhou's culture is enterprising and outward-looking. The city claims Southern drama (nanxi) as its creation, and Ou opera and wooden-arch bridges in the mountain county of Taishun belong to its heritage. Rui'an keeps the craft of wooden movable-type printing for clan genealogies, inscribed on UNESCO's urgent-safeguarding list.

Getting around

Wenzhou South is on the coastal high-speed line between Ningbo and Fuzhou; the S1 suburban line links it with the airport and the coast.
Wenzhou Longwan International Airport lies on the coast east of the city.
