Overview

Taimu is a small mountain with a large number of named rocks. Its granite has weathered into rounded domes, stacked boulders and pillars that local tradition reads as animals, immortals and objects, and into a labyrinth of fissure caves through which paths squeeze and climb. From the upper viewpoints the peaks give way to islands and the sea.

The mountain is closely tied to tea. The hills of Fuding produce white tea, the least processed of Chinese teas, and the most famous grade, Silver Needle, is linked by legend to a tea bush on Taimu that Grandmother Taimu is said to have used to cure children of measles.

How the landscape formed

The mountain is formed of Cretaceous granite intruded during the volcanic activity that shaped the whole south-east China coast. Uplift and weathering along crossing joints split the granite into blocks; rounded boulders fell into the joints and roofed them over, creating the fissure caves characteristic of Taimu. The sea on the eastern side keeps the climate mild and humid, and sea fog often rolls over the peaks.
