Taining Danxia is a landscape of red sandstone gorges, cliffs and cave alcoves in Taining county, north-western Fujian, centred on the reservoir of Dajin Lake. Part of the China Danxia World Heritage site since 2010 and a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2005, it is the example of Danxia landforms at a youthful stage of erosion.

Key facts
Overview
Danxia is the Chinese name for landscapes carved from red continental sandstone and conglomerate, named after Danxia Shan in Guangdong. The six areas inscribed together as China Danxia in 2010 were chosen to show the landform at different stages of its development, and Taining stands for youth: a plateau of red rock only recently incised, cut by hundreds of narrow, deep gorges and lined with honeycomb caves and overhangs.
Much of the landscape is seen from the water. Dajin Lake, a reservoir on the upper Min River system, winds between red cliffs, and smaller streams run through slot-like gullies. Taining town itself is an old county seat with a well-preserved Ming residential quarter.
How the landscape formed
The rocks are red sandstones and conglomerates laid down in a Cretaceous basin, later uplifted. Streams have cut down along the rock's vertical joints faster than the valley sides could retreat, so the gorges are deep and narrow — some only a few metres wide — with sheer walls. Softer layers in the cliffs weather back into shallow caves and alcoves, and clusters of small cavities give the “honeycomb” texture typical of Taining.
Highlights
Dajin Lake
大金湖
The Golden Lake, a reservoir whose arms wind between red cliffs and islands; explored by boat.
Shangqing Stream
上清溪
A clear stream through a winding gorge, descended on bamboo rafts.
Zhaixia Grand Canyon
寨下大峡谷
A walking trail through narrow gorges and fissures with the geopark's clearest views of the rock structure.
Ganlu Temple
甘露寺
A Song-dynasty wooden temple built into a cliff alcove, its halls supported largely on a single column.
Plants and wildlife
The gorges hold humid, shaded microhabitats where ferns, mosses and evergreen forest survive on the cliff faces, while the plateau tops carry pine and broadleaf woods. The contrast between gorge floor and cliff top supports a rich flora for such a small area.
Plants
Ferns
蕨类
Dense fern growth on the damp walls of the narrow gorges.
Masson pine
马尾松
Common on the dry red-rock ridges above the gorges.
Wildlife
Egrets
白鹭
Feed along the shores of Dajin Lake.
Culture and legend
Taining was an important county in the Song dynasty and produced two top-ranked graduates of the palace examinations, a fact still celebrated in the town. Buddhist temples were fitted into the cliff alcoves, where overhangs sheltered them from rain.
