Overview

Entering China has become dramatically easier: citizens of more than 40 countries can currently visit visa-free for up to 30 days, a policy confirmed through the end of 2026. Travelers who fall outside the visa-free scheme — or who plan to work, study, or stay longer — still go through the classic visa system, with categories for every purpose from tourism and business to employment and study.

One rule now applies to absolutely everyone, visa or no visa: the digital China Arrival Card, mandatory since December 2025, must be completed online before arrival. Add generous visa-free transit windows of up to 240 hours for eligible nationalities, and a layover in Beijing or Shanghai can turn into a genuine mini-trip.

Visa-Free Entry & Transit

Since late 2024 China has rolled out its most open entry policy in decades. Depending on your passport, you may not need a visa at all for a short trip — and even long layovers can become visa-free city breaks.

30-day visa-free entry for citizens of more than 40 countries — including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and South Korea — currently confirmed through December 31, 2026
240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit for eligible nationalities, including travelers from the US, UK, and Canada, when continuing to a third country or region
Hainan 30-day visa-free entry for citizens of 59 countries
Digital China Arrival Card required for every entry — including visa-free visitors — since December 2025

Important: Visa-free eligibility depends on your nationality, and the 30-day scheme is currently confirmed only through December 31, 2026 — an extension has not yet been announced. Verify the official status before booking travel beyond that date, and check transit rules with your airline.

Arrival Card: every traveler — visa-free or not — must complete the digital China Arrival Card before arrival, via the official NIA channels (app, WeChat/Alipay mini-program, or web). Filling it out is free and takes a few minutes; do it up to 24 hours before departure.
