China Trade in Review: Yearly Editions
A yearly, sourced review of China's foreign trade — total trade, exports and imports, partners, product composition, investment and the policy events of the year — published as dated editions that are never rewritten, so that years can be compared like for like.
How to read China's trade figures
China's headline trade numbers come from the General Administration of Customs (GACC), which publishes monthly data in the second week of the following month and a full-year release in mid-January. Figures are reported in both yuan and US dollars; growth rates differ between the two because of the exchange rate, and the dollar series is the one used in most international comparison.
Customs data counts goods crossing the border, including processing trade and goods moving through bonded zones, and attributes exports to the country of final destination as declared. Partner-country statistics therefore rarely match China's own — Hong Kong re-exports and transshipment through Southeast Asia are the usual reasons. The National Bureau of Statistics adds the production side; the Ministry of Commerce reports foreign direct investment; the State Administration of Foreign Exchange reports the balance of payments, where services trade appears.
Each edition below states the reporting year, the vintage of every figure and the publisher. Prior editions stay as published; corrections by the statistical agencies are noted in the next edition rather than edited into the old one.

2026 edition
China Trade in Review 2026 (year to date, as of September 2026)
This edition covers January to August 2026 and is completed after the year closes. The first half of 2026 was the strongest on record: total trade rose 16.9 % to 25.47 trillion yuan, exports 13.4 % and imports 22.1 % (General Administration of Customs, 14 July 2026), driven by semiconductors, rare earths, cars and ships and by partners outside the United States, while the US tariff regime was extended and a Middle East conflict disrupted shipping twice.
2025 edition
China Trade in Review 2025
China's goods trade reached a record 45.47 trillion yuan in 2025, up 3.8 %, with exports growing 6.1 % and imports 0.5 % (General Administration of Customs, 14 January 2026). The year's story was diversion: trade with the United States fell by roughly a quarter under the tariff regime while ASEAN, the European Union and Belt and Road partners absorbed the growth, and the 'new three' of electric vehicles, batteries and solar led the export mix.
