Tencent
腾讯控股有限公司
Tencent is China's largest internet company by market value and the operator of WeChat, the messaging, payment and mini-program platform through which most business communication and much consumer commerce in China now runs; it is also the world's largest video-game publisher and a major cloud and fintech provider.
Key facts
Overview
Founded in Shenzhen in 1998 by Ma Huateng (Pony Ma) and partners, Tencent began with the QQ messenger and grew through online games, advertising and, from 2011, WeChat (Weixin), which became the operating system of Chinese daily life: messaging, official accounts, WeChat Pay, mini programs and Channels short video, with more than 1.3 billion monthly users. Tencent Games publishes Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile and owns Riot Games, Supercell and stakes in Epic and dozens of studios; Tencent Cloud, Tencent Music, WeBank and a portfolio of investments in JD, Pinduoduo, Meituan and others round out the group. It listed in Hong Kong in 2004; South Africa's Naspers (now Prosus) has been the largest shareholder since 2001.
For a foreign business, Tencent matters as the owner of WeChat — the channel for customer communication, official accounts and mini-program storefronts in China — and of WeChat Pay, and as a cloud vendor.
Market position
China's most valuable listed company for most of the last decade, the dominant messaging and payments platform (with Alipay), the largest games company worldwide by revenue, and the second-largest cloud provider in China after Alibaba.
