Overview

Lei Jun founded Xiaomi in 2010 with the MIUI Android skin and a strategy of selling well-specified smartphones online at thin margins, funded by internet services. The company reached the global top five in smartphones by 2014, listed in Hong Kong in 2018, and built through investments an ecosystem of hundreds of partner companies making connected devices — from power banks and air purifiers to scooters and televisions — sold under Xiaomi and Redmi brands. It is consistently among the top three smartphone vendors worldwide with Samsung and Apple, strongest in India, Southeast Asia, Europe and Latin America.

In March 2024 Xiaomi launched the SU7 electric car, built in its own Beijing plant, and added the YU7 SUV in 2025; the automotive business reached scale faster than any recent entrant. Revenue was 365.9 billion yuan in 2024 and grew strongly into 2025.

For a foreign counterparty

Price and distribution
Retail partners and distributors gain a high-volume brand with fast product cycles.
Ecosystem supply
Xiaomi's partner factories are a sourcing route for connected devices.
Automotive newcomer
A supplier base and technology partners built quickly; component makers seek Xiaomi contracts.

Considerations

Thin margins
Hardware margins are deliberately low; distributors work on volume.
Trade and security scrutiny
Xiaomi was briefly on a US investment blacklist in 2021 (removed after litigation); Indian tax and foreign-exchange investigations have affected its largest overseas market.
Automotive risk
Car making absorbs capital; a fatal SU7 crash in 2025 drew scrutiny of driver-assistance marketing.
